Common questions
What is the difference between a CNM and a CPM?
A certified nurse-midwife (CNM) is a registered nurse with a graduate degree in midwifery from an ACME-accredited program and AMCB certification, licensed by the state and able to prescribe. A certified professional midwife (CPM) is certified by NARM, with required out-of-hospital birth experience, and works mainly in homes and birth centers; whether and how CPMs are licensed depends on the state.
Does a listing mean the midwife is licensed?
Not by itself. Every listing has an active NPI with a birth center, midwife or doula specialty, which the provider chose. Many listings show a license number the provider entered on the NPI record; confirm it with your state before you choose.
Does Medicaid cover midwives and birth centers?
Federal law makes nurse-midwife services and freestanding birth center services (when licensed or recognized by the state) mandatory Medicaid benefits. Coverage of CPMs, licensed midwives and doulas is decided by each state. The provider must be enrolled with your state program or plan.
Why aren't individual doulas listed?
Individual doulas often register a home address with the NPI registry, so we list doula organizations, agencies and community programs only.
Do you show birth center accreditation?
No. There is no public national file of birth center licensing or accreditation, so we don't infer either. Check the Commission for the Accreditation of Birth Centers' search and ask the center for its state license.
Do you take fees for referrals?
No. Providers can buy a flat-fee featured listing, labelled as such. We never charge per referral, client or birth.
